Opera Then and Now surveys the history of opera from its birth with the Florentine Camerata and its first master, Claudio Monteverdi through the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century Modern periods. It will be offered Fall Semester 2014.
OTN looks at opera as an elaborate multi-media form of storytelling. It focuses on the three main groups who from Then to Now have created opera:
The Creators (composers and librettists)
The Enactors (singers, designers, directors, conductors)
Each semester OTN takes advantage of performances at Opera Omaha and the Met HD at Film Streams to provide students with the experience of great works. UNO students receive opportunities to attend events free of charge. Class time is split between historic timelines, trends and innovations and audio highlights of opera’s most significant works.
